I went to a workshop yesterday for newbies at the State Capitol on Best Practices for Staff or What I Wish I Had Known. It was pretty lame except I thought one comment was worth taking home. One of the battle-scarred on the panel said wisely, I thought...always let your boss be the hero.
Of course, here we are dealing with representatives and senators...so that goes without saying.
But in life, maybe in my life, I should let others be the hero more often. And maybe...don't smack me about the head for saying this because this is hard to admit.....just maybe I should let some of the guys in my life be the hero more often. Or even once.
So often I have put the men in my life into the role of Reliable Villain or at the least, Lovable Lout.
Maybe because I spent much of adulthood married to a Very Sick Person. Maybe because it's lazy and easy to cast men as the lesser species....(I mean, c'mon, look around). Maybe because some of us have had to work to get respect from The Man. I don't know.
I'm raising young men, and I certainly want them to know men are just as capable of the everyday acts of ordinary heroism and minor miracles as their mom. Because they are.
